Children Love Acupuncture
Racing into your moaning child’s room in the middle of the night and feeling their body burning with a blistering fever…a fitful cough which has gone on for a week keeping everyone in the house from sleeping- initially chock-full of yellow phlegm, then its dry and hacking, now its phlegmy again…the third earache this term that pulls your child out of school and into the doctor’s office where they have suggested yet another course of antibiotics. These are but a few of the health concerns that children and their parents endure. As a father of two young children, Dr. Fred has experienced the fear and helplessness that accompanies the screaming fits of a sick child. With their unique physiology children take to acupuncture remarkably well, while recent studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can serve as a significant alternative or adjunct to other treatments.

ADHD is a brain condition that makes concentrating difficult and behavior hard to control. Along with the higher numbers of ADHD-diagnosed children in the U.S., most are given stimulant medications, such as Ritalin or Adderall (“speed”), to treat or curb ADHD symptoms, The use of Ritalin for children suffering from ADHD is, because of its side effects and addictiveness, becoming less and less popular among many health conscious parents. These parents then often look for alternative treatments to solve their children’s behavioral problems.
“Children with ADHD reflect the social forces around them; an entire society has ADHD characterized by impatience, impulsivity, and unwillingness to pay attention.”
At 1000 Folded Cranes, we take a multi-pronged approach to treatment by working with the diet, behavioral and sleep habits, and reducing lifestyle stressors in addition to acupuncture and herbs for ADD and ADHD. Our treatment protocol is an excellent addition to any already in place treatment plan as it helps the body restore balance, treating the root of the disorder, while also diminishing the symptoms of ADHD, improving focus and attention, managing moods, lowering hyperactivity, fidgeting and enhancing concentration.
Autism/ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)
We understand that acupuncture for children with ASD is a scary introduction of a new treatment into the schedule of an autistic child. It also involves allowing a new person in their environment to touch them in ways that may or may not be upsetting to them. Thankfully Dr. Fred’s calming presence and his years of experience working with children allow him to connect with and gain the trust of even the most nervous of his young patients.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is a wonderfully effective therapy for children with ASD. New research shows that after 12 weeks of treatment, children have shown improvements in:
- Social initiation
- Motor skills
- Attention span
- Receptive language
Our treatment techniques for stimulating acupuncture points are safe and always tailored to meet the unique characteristic and personality of the child to ensure balance and harmonious flow of energy. Although acupuncture does not cure autism, treatments improve the quality of life for children and their families.
The Unique Physiology of Children
Chinese medicine wisely recognizes that children have unique physiological characteristics and do not consider them to be miniature adults. With this as his foundation, Dr. Fred employs 5 treatment modalities with his ‘tiniest’ of patients:
Shonishin: (pronounced show-nee-shin) Originates from Japan, where it is considered an essential and recurring massage treatment for children. Painless and gentle, this ‘acupuncture’ technique uses non-inserted silver tools designed specifically for children to stimulate the meridians and acupuncture points. The massage tools never penetrate the skin and are designed to tap, rub, and brush the skin in order to strengthen the child’s developing meridians and organ systems. A treatment can be performed in 10–20 minutes depending on the age of the child and the severity of the illness.
Tui-na: Traditional Chinese infant massage and like shonishin has profound effects on childhood illnesses. It is a favored modality of Dr. Fred’s because time-tested techniques are easily taught to parents thus empowering the most important healers in a child’s life and creating strong emotional bonds between child and parent through the medium of touch. It is the only hands-on system that has been developed specifically for the total healthcare of infants from birth to six years.
Dietary Advice: Chinese medicine teaches that children come into the world with immature digestive systems and are unable to break down their food completely. This leads to what Chinese medicine calls food accumulation — the root cause of many digestive problems and is in infants and young children. A healthy digestive system is the pivot upon which a healthy child depends.
Herbs: Both Chinese and Western herbs are used to great effect. For example, Dr. Fred has always calmed his feverish children with an infusion of chamomile, lemon balm, catnip, peppermint, and elderberry. Reduces the fever quickly; calms a fussy child; and tastes delicious.
Acupuncture: Using acupuncture needles is always a last option, but there are situations when it’s absolutely necessary. Tuina or shonishin are not recommended when treating skin rashes or conditions where the skin is compromised. When the child is overly tired, restless or so hyperactive that he/she cannot sit still through a treatment, it is best to use needles. Dr. Fred never uses more than two or three points per session, and there is no retention on the points for children under 10. For high fevers, bleeding tends to be the best modality; for cold situations, moxa therapy is a must.
